Mexico vs. Cameroon (Group A)

The second day of World Cup 2014 action begins with the second match from Group A. Brazil beat Croatia 3-1 in yesterday’s opening match. Now, Mexico and Cameroon face off, and both will feel encouraged by Croatia’s defeat yesterday. The sense in group A, reasonably, is that everyone is playing for second place after Brazil. We should see an open, exciting match, since both teams now see three points as a springboard to the second round.

What’s At Stake

Because Croatia (probably the second best team in this group) lost by two goals yesterday, today’s winners can expect to advance, on goal difference at least, by playing for a draw in their own match with the Croats and trying to limit the damage against Brazil. The benefit of winning today would be especially pronounced if the victory were by two or more goals. So expect both teams to go for it and keep going for it, even after a goal is scored.

Tactics

Mexico will play with three center backs and two wing backs, meaning Cameroon might have trouble finding space on the wings if Mexico’s wing backs are defensively disciplined. On the other hand, Mexico will likely have the ball for long periods of the match, and Cameroon may have some chances on the break. Mexico, surprisingly, may also have some chances on the break. Cameroon have a tendency to fly forward in transition, and a bad pass could see them caught out.

Skilled Players

Both sides have some truly gifted players. Gio dos Santos, who has played for Tottenham Hotspur and Barcelona, is capable of moments of pure genius. His winding, feinting chipped goal against the US in the Gold Cup several years ago was absolute magic. Cameroon have their own current and ex-Barcelona players in Alex Song, who will run things from central midfield when the Africans break out, and thrilling Cameroonian forward Samuel Eto’o.

Match-specific Drinking Games

Long Shots: You take a shot whenever a player does, as long as it’s from outside the box. Both sides like a pop. How drunk? Feeling good.

Assou-Ekotto Dribbles Into Trouble: Yes, I know he’s a defender, but he doesn’t. Play this game at your own risk. How drunk? Pick the wrong day and you’re risking your life.

Goal Waterfall: If Mexico scores, start drinking, and don’t stop until the “Gooooooallll” call ends. How drunk? I’d use beer for this, tops.

Drinks

Mexico: Tequila. You probably know your way around some tequila already.

Cameroon: Afofo, a distilled palm wine. If you want to switch favorite teams, or just drink beer this game, I won’t judge you.
